Josephus Xaver Merz

According to D. Wayne & Gerry Metz:
The family entered the USA in 1853 from Unteraegeri, Switzerland, consisting of the parents, Franz Xaver (Charles), anna and Peter.

The Ocean voyage was by three-masted schooner from antwerp, Belgium, to Castle Garden Reception Center, Battery Park, New York City. Travel documents are available. The only known address for Merz family of 7 in the US was 274 South 6th Street, Hudson City, NJ, annexed by Jersey City in 1870.

The parents died about a year apart, leaving five children orphaned, all aged 16 and under. All exceot Charles were placed in St. Mary's Orphanage, Jersey City. The three youngest later went to live with Charles and his wife until their maturity.

Josephus married Catherina Barbara Faessler on 20 Nov 1843. (Catherina Barbara Faessler was born about 1820 and died about 1862.)
